There is no verified direct relationship, friendship, family connection, or professional collaboration between Ed Sheeran and Al Pacino. The strongest documented reason their names become associated is Martin Scorsese’s 2019 film The Irishman, which stars Pacino and tells the story of Frank Sheeran, a man who was once reported to be a distant relative of Ed Sheeran.
That reported family connection is itself uncertain. Actor Stephen Graham said Ed had described Frank Sheeran as a distant uncle, but later genealogical research reported that available British and American records did not establish a direct link.
Ed Sheeran and Al Pacino: The Connection Explained
The association between Ed Sheeran and Al Pacino is indirect and revolves around The Irishman.
In the film, Robert De Niro plays Frank Sheeran, an American union official whose accounts of organized crime and Jimmy Hoffa became the basis of Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses. Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa, the powerful Teamsters leader whose 1975 disappearance remains one of the best-known unresolved cases in modern American history. Netflix describes the film as a story told through Frank Sheeran’s perspective that examines Hoffa’s disappearance and postwar organized crime.
Ed Sheeran does not appear in the movie. His name entered coverage surrounding the film because of claims that he might be related to the real Frank Sheeran.
| Question | What is verified? |
|---|---|
| Are Ed Sheeran and Al Pacino related? | No evidence indicates any family relationship |
| Have they worked together? | No documented film, music, television, or stage collaboration has been established |
| Was Ed Sheeran in The Irishman? | No |
| Who did Al Pacino play? | Jimmy Hoffa |
| Who played Frank Sheeran? | Robert De Niro |
| Why is Ed Sheeran connected to the story? | A reported, but unproven, claim that Frank Sheeran was a distant relative |
How The Irishman Created the Association
Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman was released in 2019 with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in the principal cast. Netflix lists De Niro as Frank Sheeran and identifies Pacino among the film’s stars, while the Academy later nominated Pacino for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Jimmy Hoffa.
The film focuses heavily on the relationship between Frank Sheeran and Hoffa. That matters because when reports about Ed Sheeran’s possible family connection to Frank began circulating during the movie’s release, stories naturally mentioned Pacino because he played Hoffa, one of the central figures in Frank Sheeran’s story.
In other words, Pacino is connected to Frank Sheeran’s cinematic story, while Ed Sheeran became connected to Frank through an alleged family link. That does not create a direct connection between the singer and Pacino.
Is Ed Sheeran Really Related to Frank Sheeran?
The safest answer is that the relationship has never been conclusively established.
In November 2019, The Independent reported that British actor Stephen Graham, who also appears in The Irishman, said Ed Sheeran had told him Frank Sheeran was his “distant uncle.” The report did not contain independent genealogical evidence confirming the statement.
Subsequent reporting complicated the story. Men’s Health, citing genealogical research based on birth, marriage and death records in Britain and the United States dating to the nineteenth century, reported that researchers found no direct family link between Ed and Frank Sheeran.
El País similarly reported that genealogists found no evidence supporting the straightforward “distant uncle” description. A considerably more remote relationship was considered theoretically possible through older Irish ancestry, but it was not established as fact.
The distinction matters. Sharing the surname Sheeran and having Irish ancestry does not by itself demonstrate a biological relationship.
What can reasonably be concluded?
There are three separate facts that are sometimes blended together online:
- Stephen Graham publicly reported that Ed Sheeran had described Frank Sheeran as a distant uncle.
- Independent genealogical research subsequently failed to demonstrate that direct relationship.
- Al Pacino is not part of that alleged family connection. His involvement comes from portraying Jimmy Hoffa in the film about Frank Sheeran.
Calling Frank Sheeran a confirmed relative of Ed Sheeran therefore goes beyond the available evidence.
Who Was Frank Sheeran?
Frank Sheeran, born in 1920, was an American labor union figure who became closely associated in popular culture with organized crime and Jimmy Hoffa. His later accounts formed the basis for Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses, which Scorsese adapted into The Irishman.
Netflix presents the film as the story of a World War II veteran who became involved with the Bufalino crime family and whose life intersected with Hoffa’s disappearance.
It is important to separate the movie from established historical fact. Frank Sheeran made major claims about his criminal activities, including his role in Hoffa’s fate, but parts of his account have long been disputed. Even Netflix’s official synopsis frames Hoffa’s disappearance as an unsolved mystery, rather than treating the film’s version as a proven resolution of the case.
Al Pacino’s Role as Jimmy Hoffa
Al Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa in The Irishman, opposite Robert De Niro’s Frank Sheeran.
Pacino’s performance became one of the film’s most recognized elements. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated him for the 2020 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role. Joe Pesci, another major member of the cast, received a nomination in the same category.
It was also historically notable for Pacino’s career because The Irishman was his first feature-film collaboration with Martin Scorsese, despite both men having been central figures in American cinema for decades. Contemporary coverage of the film specifically noted that milestone.
Pacino’s Jimmy Hoffa is therefore the clearest bridge between his name and searches involving the Sheeran surname.
Was Ed Sheeran Involved With The Irishman?
No. Ed Sheeran was not a cast member of The Irishman and is not listed by Netflix among the film’s principal or supporting cast.
The official cast includes Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin and Stephen Graham, among others. Ed Sheeran’s role in the wider story was limited to entertainment reporting about his possible ancestry.
This distinction is particularly useful because searches such as “Ed Sheeran Al Pacino movie” can give the impression that the singer and actor appeared together on screen. There is no evidence that they did.

He has remained publicly active well beyond those classic roles. His memoir, Sonny Boy, was released in hardcover in 2024, with Penguin Random House publishing a paperback edition in May 2026. The publisher describes the book as Pacino’s account of his upbringing, acting career, major collaborations and decades in film and theater.
Again, neither his memoir nor his documented recent work identifies a significant personal or professional relationship with Ed Sheeran.
Why Do People Search for Ed Sheeran and Al Pacino Together?
The search is most likely driven by a chain of associations rather than one direct event:
Ed Sheeran → alleged connection to Frank Sheeran → The Irishman → Jimmy Hoffa → Al Pacino.
That chain explains why pages discussing Ed Sheeran and Frank Sheeran frequently mention Pacino even though Pacino has no known role in Sheeran’s family history.
This type of search pattern is common with celebrity names. Two famous people can become semantically linked because they appear in articles about the same film, individual or historical event without ever actually having worked together.
The relationship map

| Jimmy Hoffa | Labor leader whose relationship with Frank is central to the story |
| Al Pacino | Plays Jimmy Hoffa |
