Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo have developed a documented public connection built around football, the White House and Ronaldo’s stated interest in discussing peace with the U.S. president. Their most significant direct encounter came on November 18, 2025, when Ronaldo and his fiancée Georgina Rodríguez met Trump in the Oval Office before Ronaldo attended a White House dinner connected to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit.
The relationship did not begin with that meeting. Trump had spoken publicly about Ronaldo years earlier, Ronaldo sent Trump a signed Portugal shirt in June 2025, and both men later made complimentary public remarks about one another. By July 2026, Trump said publicly that he had gotten to know Ronaldo “over the years” and called him “a great guy.”
What Is the Connection Between Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo?
The Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo connection is best described as a cordial public relationship rather than a documented long-term private friendship.
Their interactions have included:
- Trump discussing Ronaldo during an official meeting with Portugal’s president in 2018.
- Ronaldo sending Trump an autographed Portugal jersey carrying a peace message in June 2025.
- Ronaldo publicly saying he wanted to meet Trump and discuss world peace.
- A face-to-face Oval Office meeting in November 2025.
- Ronaldo attending a White House dinner hosted by Trump during Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit.
- Publicly complimentary messages from both men afterward.
- Further references by Trump to Ronaldo during the 2026 World Cup period.
There is no reliable public evidence showing that Ronaldo has formally endorsed Trump in a U.S. election or aligned himself with a U.S. political party. Ronaldo has, however, spoken favorably about Trump personally and about what he believed Trump could potentially contribute to international peace efforts.

Trump Was Talking About Ronaldo as Early as 2018
The earliest major documented connection dates to June 27, 2018, during Trump’s first presidential term.
Trump hosted Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the White House while the 2018 FIFA World Cup was underway in Russia. During their discussion, Rebelo de Sousa mentioned that Portugal had Cristiano Ronaldo, whom he described as the best footballer in the world.
Trump responded that his son Barron knew a great deal about Ronaldo and asked Rebelo de Sousa how good the Portuguese player really was. The conversation eventually turned humorous when Trump asked whether Ronaldo might someday run against Rebelo de Sousa for the Portuguese presidency.
The exchange did not establish a personal Trump-Ronaldo relationship, but it showed that Ronaldo was already a familiar name inside the Trump family, particularly because of Barron Trump’s interest in football.
Cristiano Ronaldo Sent Trump a Signed Shirt in 2025
A much more direct connection appeared during the G7 summit in Canada in June 2025.
European Council President António Costa, a former prime minister of Portugal, gave Trump a Portugal national-team shirt signed by Ronaldo. Ronaldo had written a personal message to Trump on it:
“To President Donald J. Trump, Playing for Peace.”
Trump reacted positively to the wording when Costa presented the shirt. ESPN reported Trump saying he liked the “playing for peace” message.
The jersey mattered because it was not simply ordinary football memorabilia. Ronaldo had addressed Trump personally and attached a diplomatic theme to the gift.
Why Did Ronaldo Write “Playing for Peace”?
Ronaldo later explained his thinking when Piers Morgan asked him about the shirt.
In their November 2025 interview, Ronaldo said that peace was the objective and described Trump as someone who could “change or help to change the world.” Ronaldo said he hoped to meet the president personally and have a conversation with him.
He also indicated that he wanted their conversation to involve world peace.
Those comments represented Ronaldo’s personal view of Trump’s potential influence. They should not be confused with evidence of a formal diplomatic role for Ronaldo or proof that he endorsed specific Trump administration policies.
Ronaldo Said He Wanted to Meet Donald Trump
Shortly before the two eventually met, Ronaldo made his interest especially clear in his interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo said Trump was one of the people he wanted to meet and that he would like to sit down with him for a conversation. He also hinted that the two had “something in common,” but declined to explain publicly what he meant.
The footballer was complimentary toward Trump and said he liked people whom he believed could make things happen.
That interview was published less than two weeks before Ronaldo appeared at the White House.
Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo Met at the White House
The meeting Ronaldo had discussed publicly soon became reality.
On November 18, 2025, official White House photographs documented Trump meeting Ronaldo in the Oval Office. Georgina Rodríguez was also present for part of the visit, and White House photographs show the group together as well as Trump walking with Ronaldo and Rodríguez along the West Colonnade.
This was the clearest evidence that the connection had moved beyond indirect messages and public comments.
Ronaldo was in Washington as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited the United States. Reuters confirmed that Ronaldo attended a White House meeting and later a dinner hosted by Trump during the Saudi leader’s visit.
Why Was Cristiano Ronaldo at the White House Dinner?
Ronaldo’s presence also had a clear Saudi football context.
He has played for Saudi club Al-Nassr since the end of 2022. Reuters reported during the White House visit that his contract ran until 2027 and that Al-Nassr was majority owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
The dinner itself brought together political, business and sporting figures during Mohammed bin Salman’s Washington visit. Ronaldo’s attendance therefore placed one of Saudi football’s most globally recognizable players at a major U.S.-Saudi event.
It would go beyond the available evidence, however, to claim that Ronaldo attended in an official diplomatic capacity. Public reporting identifies him as a prominent guest rather than a government representative.
Barron Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo
Barron Trump has been an important recurring part of the story.
Trump had already told Portugal’s president in 2018 that his son knew about Ronaldo. Seven years later, at the November 2025 White House event, Trump again referred to Barron’s admiration for the football star.
Trump told attendees that Barron was a major Ronaldo fan and joked that his son might respect him more after he arranged the introduction. Contemporary reporting from the event confirmed the exchange.
Trump has repeatedly linked his own growing familiarity with international football to his children, especially Barron.
What Ronaldo Said After Meeting Trump
After the White House meeting, Ronaldo publicly thanked Trump for the invitation and welcome extended to him and Georgina Rodríguez.
Ronaldo’s message again returned to the theme of peace. He spoke about contributing to a future shaped by responsibility and “lasting peace,” continuing the idea he had first attached to the signed Portugal shirt. His post was reported alongside coverage of the White House visit.
Trump responded publicly as well.
On November 20, 2025, Trump wrote that Ronaldo was a “GREAT GUY,” adding that he had enjoyed meeting him and describing him as smart and cool.
Trump later posted on December 6 that Ronaldo had called him to express thanks for the White House and Oval Office tour.
Did Cristiano Ronaldo Endorse Donald Trump Politically?
There is no reliable evidence that Cristiano Ronaldo formally endorsed Donald Trump in a U.S. presidential election.
Ronaldo has expressed personal admiration for Trump, said that he wanted to speak with him about peace and thanked him publicly after visiting the White House. Those are documented statements.
They are not the same thing as an electoral endorsement, party affiliation or support for every policy associated with Trump.
This distinction is especially important because photos of athletes with politicians are frequently presented online without their original context.
Trump Continued Talking About Ronaldo in 2026
Their public connection remained visible after the White House meeting.
In February 2026, Trump released a video message directed toward Ronaldo, praising the Portuguese player and calling on him to come to America.
The most authoritative later reference came during a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York on July 17, 2026, near the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
While discussing elite footballers, Trump mentioned Ronaldo and said:
“I got to know him over the years, and he’s a great guy.”
The statement appears in the official Compilation of Presidential Documents published through the U.S. Government Publishing Office.
That comment suggests Trump regarded their relationship as more than a single ceremonial encounter, although the full extent of any private communication between them is not publicly documented.
How Football Connects Trump and Ronaldo
Football is the central link connecting the two men.
Trump’s involvement with the sport increased substantially around major FIFA events in the United States. The United States co-hosted the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico, and Trump repeatedly appeared at FIFA-related events during the tournament.
At the July 17, 2026 FIFA reception, Trump discussed Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and other major players while describing his family’s interest in football.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, remained active at the highest level of international football into September 2026. Reuters reported on September 18 that the 41-year-old Portugal captain had been selected for new national-team coach Jorge Jesus’ first squad after the 2026 World Cup.
He was also still playing for Al-Nassr during the 2026-27 season. Reuters photographs document Ronaldo appearing for the Saudi club as recently as September 12, 2026.
Are Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo Friends?
Public evidence supports saying that Trump and Ronaldo have a friendly and mutually complimentary relationship, but describing them as close personal friends would go beyond what has been independently documented.
Ronaldo has said he likes Trump and wanted to meet him. Trump has repeatedly praised Ronaldo and later said he had gotten to know him over the years.
They have met in person, communicated afterward and publicly spoken positively about each other. What is not publicly established is how frequently they communicate privately or whether their relationship extends significantly beyond occasional high-profile contact.
Why Their Relationship Gets So Much Attention
The interest comes from the unusual intersection of two exceptionally recognizable public figures.
Ronaldo is one of football’s most famous players and has built a career spanning Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al-Nassr and Portugal. Trump is the president of the United States.
Their interaction also sits at the intersection of several larger subjects:
- U.S. politics
- international football
- U.S.-Saudi relations
- Saudi Arabia’s growing role in global sport
- the 2026 FIFA World Cup
- celebrity involvement in public diplomacy
That combination explains why even relatively small interactions, such as a signed jersey or a social-media message, have attracted international coverage.
Current Status of the Trump-Ronaldo Relationship
As of September 2026, there is no publicly confirmed new in-person meeting more recent than Ronaldo’s November 2025 White House visit.
The connection nevertheless remained publicly visible into 2026. Trump referenced Ronaldo positively during the FIFA World Cup period, and Ronaldo has not publicly withdrawn the complimentary comments he made about Trump in 2025.
The strongest factual description is therefore straightforward: Donald Trump and Cristiano Ronaldo know each other, have met at the White House, have exchanged positive messages, and have publicly expressed respect for one another.
Claims that go further, such as describing Ronaldo as a formal political supporter, adviser or diplomatic representative, are not supported by the available evidence.
